Assignment 1 Submission 2: Annotated Summary

The contents of this article discuss on the concept behind kinetic floor tiles and the effect of using it. According to Dr Winkleman et al. (2011) the ability for kinetic floor tiles to generate electricity is due to the “Piezoelectric Effect”; this phenomenon generates electrical charges when an external stress exerts on a piezoelectric material. It converts kinetic energy to electrical energy through a compression of 5 millimeters on the tiles by human footsteps and that energy generated can be used to power devices. The tiles are made up of a variety of recycled materials that have minimum impact on the environment, it is also made to last for 5 years and withstand harsh weather conditions.  Dr Winkleman et al. also analyzes the positive and negative impacts such as social, environmental and economic effects of utilizing the technology. From social perspective, kinetic floor tiles help to change the way people view on sustainable changes. Furthermore, the article mentioned the

Title Generating renewable energy through kinetic footfall from human traffic, to provide off-grid power for indoor ceiling lights Background Information “(Climate change) is one of the gravest challenges facing humankind.” According to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, global warming is a severe problem in Singapore. Approximately 95% of Singapore’s electricity is generated from natural gasses, coal and petroleum. (Electrify 2017) However, these forms of electricity generation produce heat-trapping emissions as a by-product, contributing to the effects of global warming. Therefore it is critical for Singapore government agencies to move towards using alternative sustainable electricity generation methods for their power consumption. This will spearhead the usage of off-grid power sources to meet individual electricity needs, helping wane off usage of conventional power generation. These alternative sustainable energy sources will help in reducing the emission of greenhouse gas
